Exploring Tahoe
Starts Here

Desolation Hotel is owned and operated by outdoorsmen and women.

Explorers and adventurers with decades of experience in the area, our staff knows the local landscape like the back of our hands. In fact, it’s our knowledge of the area that sets us apart from other resorts and attracts modern adventurers like you.

Situated on the southern end of the lake, Desolation Hotel Lake Tahoe sits in one of the U.S.’s most revered outdoor destinations.

The Lake

A lauded natural gem, Lake Tahoe is one of the largest and deepest lakes in the world, celebrated for its crystal-clear turquoise water that alone is worth a visit. With clean, sandy beaches, the southern shore is an ideal spot to lounge in the sun or play in the water. Enjoy boating, jet skiing, paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, and more. And with access to a shared private beach that’s just a stone’s throw away, long days on the lake are always in season.

The Mountains

Nestled amongst the magnificent Sierra Nevada Mountains — a range that’s home to Yosemite National Park and Sequoia National Park — our location is unmatched for exploring and enjoying new heights. Stellar skiing, mountain biking, snow shoeing, and hiking is available just steps from our front door. A 5-minute walk to the Heavenly Valley Gondola will have you whisked to the mountaintop, and another 5 minutes further will bring you to Van Sickle Bi-State Park.

The Wilderness

The protected forest after which we chose our name, The Desolation Wilderness is not to be missed during your time in Tahoe. Just a quick, 30-minute road trip is all it takes to immerse yourself in this natural wonder. Known for its splendid mountain peaks, pristine alpine lakes, and vast granite basins, the Desolation Wilderness beckons countless opportunities for exploration and appreciation.

The Area

A region often referred to as Tahoe South, South Lake Tahoe, CA is the largest city located on the lake’s perimeter. Situated along the southern end and abutting the California-Nevada state line, Tahoe South truly has something for everyone. While the Nevada side is known for its popular casinos, the California side predominantly features Heavenly Village, a ski resort just steps from Desolation Hotel, where shopping, restaurants, bars, and live music abound.

With lake water within an arm’s reach, mountains within a short walk, and outdoor activities everywhere you turn, Desolation Hotel is impeccably positioned to deliver the experience of a lifetime.
